It’s day 28 of my 40 days of Challenges.
I have been sick a couple of days.
But today I did my routine, went for a run and I feel relaxed and focused.
My e-book about Design Principles is slowly surfacing and ow-boy it’s a lot of work. But I will pull through, it’s going to be the cornerstone of my new way of working, and I hope it will help product designers out there.
Someone told me I should validate my content in blog posts. And they are right if you want to reach a lot of people and land new jobs. But my 40 days of challenges are about focus, what do I like best, where will my new effort in work make an impact. Also one of my area’s of interest is transforming my active into a passive income stream, enabling me to help and support other media designers, like you.
I am slowly pulling up my personal principles, my roadmap so to say. I truly believe they will guide me through this year and the years to come.
Some keywords: Coaching vs Mentoring, Teaching, Facilitating, Process over Work, Lifestyle design, Quality and Human technology for the benefit of real-life, not distorting life.
But what about the topic of this post?
Right! It is kind of self-explanatory, but the last week I did blocks of 3 hours, in which I totally focus on a prepared set of work (mostly the evening before), phone off, headphone on, and go!
After this block of 3 hours, I totally let go, sometimes and hour, sometimes longer. Before I start the next block.
And I must say, letting go of my 9-5 mentality which I always forced myself – even as a freelancer – is refreshing and feels amazing. I read a lot about social innovations in Sweden and Denmark, but choosing to do it differently makes all the difference.
The work if of higher quality, you feel relaxed, you don’t get distracted, it’s a bliss. It’s also hard.
How addicted are you to your phone? Researching the Design Principles (my upcoming e-book) for Android makes you wonder. Aren’t those just lies? They convey the feel of sincerity but looking at the results in the streets, I don’t know just yet. To me it seems “The war on Eyeballs”.
Ok back to my addictive behavior. Grabbing your phone, 2 hours in, opening up facebook or web.whatsapp.com. It’s a game of discipline and effort. I installed an app for block my phone for 3 hours (which can be over-ruled if needed) and this works great. The 30s cooldown it gives is often long enough to decide that you will pull through for that last hour.
Totally On, Totally Off. It’s a game of discipline, effort and great results.
I installed an app for block my phone for 3 hours (which can be over-ruled if needed) and this works great. App asked a bit too much of person details if you ask me, a commercialized way of tapping into your data, so I won’t promote it here. The 30s cooldown it gives is often long enough to decide that you will pull through for that last hour.
All in all making great progress on my ebook. Launch date? Let’s say the 17th of March, the last day of my challenge. And I will get first drafts out there around the 9th.
Are you a Digital Product Designer, and want to give some feedback on the first version of my first ever ebook, let me know. info (at) Niels Kijf .com
